Celebrate World Environment Day

Today is World Environment Day and we think the best way to celebrate is with a glass of Angove Organic Wine. 

10 Years ago Angove Family Winemakers set out to become a leader in Australia in high quality fully certified Organic wine production and sales.

Why?

Established in 1886 Angove Family Winemakers is one of the oldest family owned and operated wine companies in Australia - a statement in sustainability in itself. With 5 generations of involvement and an expectation of many more, together with continuous operation at the Renmark Winery site since 1910 there is a strongly held belief that all activities undertaken must be sustainable now and into the future – being Organically certified is a major part of this activity. Farming our vineyards organically was also seen as a way of growing grapes with better flavours and in the case of red wines thicker skins for better colour development.

Being sustainable and having minimal detrimental imact on the environment doesn't stop with our conversion to organic viticulture and organic winemaking - it defines much of our general activity and decision making.

Water

Conversion of all vineyards to drip irrigation has resulted in 25% less water consumption per hectare.  We also capture and store rainwater for future use as process water within the winery reducing our reliance on ever dwindling river flows.

Power

Upgrade of irrigation pumps with Variable Speed Drives has reduced power consumption by 25%.

Complete insulation of tanks and barrel stores has greatly reduced heat loss and energy use.

The installation of a 200kW solar system at the winery will cover 50% of peak time power use whilst a 30Kw system at our Mclaren Vale Cellar Door will cover 100% of power use. Both will feedback into the grid when there is excess capacity.

Conversion of Winery boilers to LPG reducing CO2 emissions by 27%.

Waste

Under vine mulching has utilised winery waste, inhibited weed growth and returned vital carbon to the soil.

Winery waste water is reused in a woodlot planted to native species. This woodlot provides a carbon sink for the winery activities, is rehabilitating a salt scald and provides a native habitat.

Investment in Centrifuge & Crossflow Filtration Technology to clarify wine without the use of Diatomaceous Earth or Perlite Filter aids has minimized the use of these products and the amount of waste.

Packaging

Angove Family Winemakers is a member of the National Packaging Covenant and has a strong commitment to recycling of all packaging materials including glass, cardboard, paper, plastics and label backings with systems are in place to ensure efficient handling and collection of all items for recycling.

Introduction of light weight bottles for our Organic Wine range that use 40% less glass and deliver a reduction of CO2 per bottle of more than 15% on certain lines.

 

FUTURE

These actions together with ongoing research and investment we believe place us in a good position to manage our carbon footprint and be sustainable today and into the future.
